Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Stellar populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I

We present a detailed study of the color magnitude diagram (CMD) of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I, based on archival Hubble Space Telescope data. Our photometric analysis, confirming previous results on the brighter portion of the CMD, allow us to obtain an accurate sampling of the stellar populations also at the faint magnitudes corresponding to the Main Sequence. By adopting a homogeneous...

The Absence of Diffuse Gas around the Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I1

We have obtained spectra of three QSO/AGNs with the GHRS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to search for absorption from low column density gas in the halo of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The probe sight lines pass 2.1, 3.7, and 8.1 kpc from the center of the galaxy, but no C IV, Si II, or Si IV absorption is found at the velocity of Leo I. The absence of low-ionization species sug...

The Nature of the New Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Antlia

The recently discovered Antlia dwarf galaxy is analyzed using V I photometry. The galaxy is resolved into a large number of stars and although the galaxy is intrinsically faint and low surface brightness, its stellar populations reveal characteristics more typical of faint star-forming dIrs rather than dEs. Significant star formation is currently going on in the central part of Antlia although ...

Stellar Velocity Dispersion of the Leo a Dwarf Galaxy

We measure the first stellar velocity dispersion of the Leo A dwarf galaxy, σ = 9.3 ± 1.3 km s. We derive the velocity dispersion from the radial velocities of ten young B supergiants and two Hii regions in the central region of Leo A. We estimate a projected mass of 8 ± 2.7 × 10 M⊙ within a radius of 2, and a mass to light ratio of at least 20± 6 M⊙/L⊙. These results imply Leo A is at least ∼8...
